This post, with poll, is about edging as a sexual practice. Edging, sometimes known as gooning or surfing, is a sexual practice involving orgasm control. It involves any form of sexual activity in which the orgasm is delayed and even prevented.
Edging shouldn't be confused with edgeplay which is a BDSM practice. Edgeplay, such as breath play (eg choking, erotic asphyxiation), cock-and-ball torture (CBT), fire play, knife play and wax play, involves a degree of risky sex but the risks are understood and accepted by its participants. Edgeplay is, or at least should be, a risk-aware consensual kink (RACK).
Edging is sexual delayed gratification and even coitus reservatus in which a man doesn't ejaculate when having penetrative sex with a woman (or another man). It's is often a key component of tantric sex.

I've not seriously practiced edging, though I have tried to delay orgasm or, more precisely, my orgasm. In order to prolong sex, I would sometimes think of mundane activities, like putting my laundry in a washing machine. Those thoughts worked for a while but when it comes to sex I don't think I'm sufficiently patient to practice edging. I tend to act on whatever's in my mind.
However, having said that, I did practice a version of edging while swinging whether it was when meeting another couple for sex or when attending a sex party. As part of a swinging couple meeting another swinging couple, invariably there was partner swapping. I was conscious that. while having sex with another woman with my partner having sex with another an in the same room and often the same bed, that I needed to delay my orgasm as I didn't want cum before my partner or at least before the man shagging my partner. My tactic was simply to prolong foreplay with the woman I was playing with and only have penetrative sex after my partner was being penetrated.
At parties, my tactic was slightly different. I would just start having sex well after my partner was having sex. But I don't think my tactics of prolonged foreplay when meeting another couple or delayed sex while at a party quite fit in with the idea of edging.

About my only experience with edging was with R. She ADORED doing it with (to?) me. She'd insert her finger in my butt and massage my prostate. Only 31 people voted in the poll about tantric sex on my FANCY A TANTRA? blog post. Though a very low turnout, I still regard the poll findings as interesting and even rich because most people haven't tried tantric sex and, most interestingly and probably for the first time in a poll in this series, slightly more women than men voted in the poll.
Only 35 per cent of poll respondents have tried tantric sex, and no one disliked the tantric sex experience.
And of those who haven't engaged in tantric sex, most wanted to try tantric sex.
Only 6 per cent of poll cent of poll respondents have been trained or coached in tantric sex.
The most interesting overall finding, given that proportionately more women have tried tantric sex and want to try tantric sex is why men are so reticent about tantric sex. Surely it can't be because men are more into wham-bam sex than women?!
I do suspect, though I can't prove, that the low turnout for this poll is down to men's reluctance to engage in tantric sex. I suspect that if I did a poll about whether a woman should swallow after a blowjob, the turnout would be much higher.
The poll isn't at all representative of either the wider membership here or even the wider population. The poll is just reflective of those who responded.
I am not sure if what I have done sometimes either in self play or with a lover would qualify as edging but I or we, have sometimes started and stopped or slowed way down to delay having an orgasm. Sometimes it seemed to help make the orgasms more intense than usual but I have also had more intense orgasms just from not slowing down. I will admit those were when I and my lover were well matches in the speed of our buildup. I definitely do not feel that edging would ever be something I would want to do on a regular basis.
My lack of patience would make me a lousy edger.
The ex had an annoying habit of pulling out during sex to keep from cumming. It got to the point where sex was nothing but marital obligation.

We may have read the same guidance when it came to parties and swinging! I definitely delayed the penetration to allow the others to get closer to their final goal and concentrated on my partner's foreplay. Alone it depends upon the ability to make it last, as is the mutual mastubation or joint mastubation process, years ago with a housemate where we had a mastubation arrangement we went for over an hour each stopping until one of us could not hold back any longer!
Intensity, well that is hit and miss for me, I like the feeling of the orgasmic contractions but also the feeling of ejaculate leaving me, when edging I have found that the volume of precum produced detracts from the amount of cum ejected.

Edging can be a great thing when your being intimate but in saying that you have to have the right partner who knows how edging is done and enjoys it as much as you do.
